Falcons Add Two-Way Defenseman Lucas Lundy

FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno Falcons continue to strengthen their blue line ahead of the 2026-27 season, announcing the signing of defenseman Lucas Lundy, a former BCHL blueliner, San Diego Sabers captain and one of the top offensive defensemen from the USPHL Pacific Division during his junior career.

The 24-year-old native of Delta, British Columbia brings Fresno an intriguing combination on the back end. Lundy has shown the ability to defend difficult matchups, move the puck under pressure and contribute offensively, while possessing one of the more dangerous shots from the blue line.

At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, the right-shot defenseman has experience playing in several different environments and styles of hockey, including time in one of Canada's most respected junior leagues.

BCHL Experience in Coquitlam

Before coming to the United States, Lundy spent two seasons with the Coquitlam Express of the British Columbia Hockey League, gaining valuable experience against high-level junior competition. Lundy appeared in 60 games with Coquitlam, recording three goals and four assists from the blue line.

While the offensive numbers only tell part of the story, his time in the BCHL helped develop many of the qualities that would later become staples of his game. Playing against talented, fast-paced competition required Lundy to make quick decisions with the puck, defend against speed and learn how to manage the game from the back end.

That experience became particularly evident when Lundy made the move south to California.

Captain and Offensive Standout in San Diego

Lundy joined the San Diego Sabers of the USPHL Premier for the 2022-23 season and immediately became one of the Pacific Division's premier defensemen. He was named captain of the Sabers, with San Diego relying on the veteran defenseman to play major minutes and contribute in virtually every situation. Lundy responded with a huge season.

In 41 games, he scored 15 goals and added 31 assists for 46 points, averaging more than a point per game from the blue line and tying the Sabers' single-season high for points by a defenseman at the time. His impact went beyond scoring. Lundy finished the season with a +18 rating and 30 blocked shots, demonstrating the two-way ability that made him such an important part of San Diego's lineup. His performance ultimately earned him recognition as a 2022-23 USPHL Premier Pacific Division All-Star.

Throughout the season, Lundy also received multiple USPHL Pacific Division Player of the Week and Player of the Month honors.

For Fresno, those numbers offer a glimpse into what makes Lundy particularly interesting. He isn't simply an offensive defenseman looking to jump into every rush. His game has traditionally been built around being dependable at both ends of the rink.

A Shot That Can Change a Possession

One of the most noticeable elements of Lundy's game is his ability to shoot the puck from the blue line. Whether getting a shot through traffic, stepping into open space or finding a shooting lane after moving laterally across the point, Lundy possesses a hard and effective shot that can create offense even when it doesn't immediately find the back of the net.

That was evident throughout his season in San Diego. His 15 goals from the blue line showed that opponents had to respect him as a shooting threat, and that can become particularly valuable when a team establishes offensive-zone possession. A defenseman capable of threatening from distance can force penalty killers and defending forwards to challenge higher in the zone, potentially opening additional space around the net and along the half wall. It is an element Fresno could utilize both at even strength and on special teams.

More Than Offense

What may ultimately make Lundy an important addition to Fresno's defense, however, is what he can provide without the puck. Lundy has shown an ability to close on opposing forwards, take away space and lock down opponents defensively. He uses his positioning effectively, competes around the puck and doesn't need to sacrifice defensive responsibility in order to create offense. That combination was noticeable during his time with San Diego. For those who watched Lundy closely in the USPHL Pacific Division, his offensive production was only one part of what made him difficult to play against. He could impact a game with a shot from the point on one shift and then eliminate an opposing scoring opportunity at the other end on the next. That type of versatility should give the Falcons coaching staff options when constructing defensive pairings. Lundy has experience playing an offensive role, handling significant responsibility, killing plays defensively and leading a locker room.

Leadership Already on His Résumé

There is another element of Lundy's background that Fresno is adding: leadership. Being selected as San Diego's captain during his final junior season spoke to more than his production. Lundy entered the Sabers organization as a player who had already accumulated BCHL experience, and he quickly became one of the team's leaders. His combination of experience, composure with the puck and performance on the ice helped establish him as a player teammates could lean on.

The Sabers themselves praised Lundy's skating ability and poise with the puck following his season in San Diego, attributes that helped him become one of the Pacific Division's most productive defensemen. His performance also earned him an opportunity to continue his career at the collegiate level.

Advancing to Arizona State

Following his standout season in San Diego, Lundy committed to Arizona State University's ACHA program. He appeared in eight games during the 2023-24 season, recording a goal and an assist from the blue line. The move to Arizona State continued a hockey journey that had already taken Lundy from British Columbia to Southern California and eventually to the college game. Now, the next chapter brings him back to California as a member of the Fresno Falcons.

Another Piece of the Falcons Blue Line

As Fresno continues assembling its inaugural roster, Lundy gives the Falcons another defenseman capable of impacting the game in multiple ways. His defense, his leadership, and his offensive capabilities make him a dual threat for the Falcons. From playing 60 BCHL games with Coquitlam, to captaining San Diego, producing 46 points in 41 games, earning Pacific Division All-Star recognition and advancing to Arizona State, Lundy's résumé shows a defenseman who has consistently taken steps forward throughout his career. The Falcons will now give him an opportunity to take another. With his ability to shut down opposing players and a blue-line shot capable of becoming a legitimate offensive weapon, Lucas Lundy adds another experienced, two-way presence to Fresno's defensive corps for the 2026-27 season.

Welcome to Fresno, Lucas. Talons Up.
